What is Clinical Research?

New Pharmaceutical Drugs require drug safety and efficacy testing before they are introduced in the market. This testing for drugs on humans comprises Clinical Trials referred as Phase I, II, III trials prior to market launch of the product & Phase IV after market introduction. The data collected from these trials has to be submitted to the respective health authorities of the countries to seek marketing approval for introduction of the product. Clinical Research is a systematic study for new drugs in human subjects to generate data for discovering or verifying the Clinical, Pharmacological (including Pharmacodynamic and Pharmacokinetic) or adverse effects with the objective of determining safety and efficacy of the new drug.

Clinical Research Opportunities

Trained Clinical Research Professionals are in great demand in India and abroad and will be for many years to come. There are more than 2,50,000 positions vacant worldwide, an unheard phenomenon in nay industry. In India as per McKinsey Report , 50,000 Professionals will be needed by july 2010. Pay scales in Clinical Research are considered amongst the industry's best.
A study by Ernst and Young indicates that the total market values of Clinical Research activities performed in India is expected to grow to around USD 1.5-2 billion. Many Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research organizations have already come forward to unlock the vast potential that India has, and are conducting Clinical Trials in India. Thus, there is expected to be a huge demand for qualified and trained Clinical Research professionals. Salaries start at Rs. 2.4 lacs p.a. and go to over Rs. 15 lacs p.a. for professional with less than 5 year experience.
