With escalating pressures on research and development (R&D) cost-containment across the global pharmaceutical industry, there is increased focus on reducing the costs of clinical research, which comprises two-thirds of development costs. The additional problem of delayed development times is also affecting new drug introductions, losing incremental revenues. One of the major factors for this delay is unsatisfactory patient recruitment rates. This dual challenge of accelerating clinical development and reducing costs has forced major pharma companies to look at alternative destinations for sourcing patients for their global studies.
India stands out prominently as an irresistible destination due to its huge patient population, English-speaking and a large pharmaceutical presence. There are several reasons why India offers advantages over other Asian countries. India has a huge pool of treatment-naïve patients who are willing to participate in clinical studies. English is the main language of communication in the hospitals in all major cities and a majority of patients in these cities, especially southern states of India , understand English.
